Discussion: UX Specialist vs Generalist

Another oldie but goodie, a topic that just refuses to die. heh.. 

I’ve read a lot of great discussions on this topic, but this one is the most recent. 

My two cents: 
“I think the same rule applies no matter what profession you are in; you have to be T-shaped: good in many things but a specialist in one. 

I don’t like how some companies expect one person to design, code and make it pretty. People who are great at all 3 things do exist, but they are the exception rather than the norm. I feel that way because it’s a reflection of my own capabilities: I’m great at UX, I love user research but others can code and make things prettier than I can. 

The only thing you can do is to flock with birds of your feather: companies that share your beliefs and operate their business the way you do. If you can’t find one, then start your own, even freelance. But keep looking. “
